Educational Pathways in New Zealand
Educational Pathways in New Zealand
Secondary Schools
Secondary education in New Zealand comprises both state-funded and private schools; state schools are open to applications from international students. Secondary education runs from Year 9 to Year 13. Upon completing Year 13, students sit the NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) examinations to apply for university. The academic year begins in February and is divided into four terms (starting in February, April, July, and October).
University Foundation Programmes
Most universities offer one-year Foundation programmes. Assessment is based on internal coursework, attendance, tests, and exams rather than a final public examination. Students typically study English, Mathematics, and three to four elective subjects related to their intended degree. Successful completion guarantees entry into the first year of university. This is suitable for students who have completed Year 11 (Secondary 5) or above.
University Diploma Programmes
Equivalent to the first year of a degree, these programmes are suitable for students who have completed Year 12 (Secondary 6). Admission requirements are generally lower than direct university entry. Classes are conducted in smaller groups, and students receive additional support in English and academic study skills. Most programmes are held at the partner university's campus, and successful completion allows for progression into the second year of a degree.
Bachelor's and Master's Degrees
New Zealand has eight public universities offering a wide range of disciplines. Intakes are usually in March and July, with some universities offering a January start. Bachelor’s degrees typically last 3 years, though professional fields such as Medicine, Engineering, and Health Sciences require longer. Master’s degrees generally range from 1 to 2 years.
