With the rapid development of the healthcare and rehabilitation sectors, occupational therapy, a profession that integrates medicine, psychology, and sociology, is becoming an increasingly popular choice. Admission Requirements for Occupational Therapy

In Hong Kong, occupational therapy degree programmes are primarily offered by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Tung Wah College. The entry requirements are relatively stringent; for instance, in the case of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE), a minimum score of around 22 points is typically required, with particular emphasis on performance in English, Chinese, Mathematics, and Science subjects. Additionally, the learning process includes language assessments and interviews to evaluate students' interest and commitment to the profession.

For overseas institutions, popular universities in the UK, Australia, and Canada have comparatively lower entry thresholds, generally requiring a DSE score of 15 to 20 points, depending on the country and institution. Specific prerequisite subjects are often not mandatory, allowing greater flexibility for students. Most institutions require an IELTS score of approximately 6.5 to 7.0 overall, with no individual component lower than 6.5 to 7.0, ensuring that students can successfully complete instruction in English and engage in professional placements.

Internship Hours and Learning Process

Both Hong Kong and overseas occupational therapy programmes require students to complete approximately 1,000 hours of clinical internships. From the early stages of their studies, students gradually engage in practical activities, transitioning to intensive full-time internships later in the curriculum, which take place in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, special education schools, and social welfare organisations. Under the strict supervision of qualified occupational therapists, students continuously enhance their assessment, treatment, and professional communication skills. This experience is essential for applying for registration and helps students adapt smoothly to future workplaces.

Professional Accreditation

Upon completing the occupational therapy degree and gaining the required internship hours, students must apply for registration with the Hong Kong Occupational Therapy Board (OTB) to obtain practising qualifications. Graduates from overseas who complete programmes accredited by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists and fulfil internships of over 1,000 hours may also apply for registration in Hong Kong, enabling cross-border practice.

Graduates from the UK must apply for occupational therapist qualifications from the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), while Australian students should apply to the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (OTBA). International accreditation standards ensure consistent professional levels, facilitating students’ future choices to work in Hong Kong or overseas.
